In December 1846, Iowa became USA’s 29th state. Known as the Corn state, Iowa took its name from the Ioway people, the Native American Tribe that inhabited the area long before the first explorers arrived in 1673.Located in the American Heartland, Iowa is also known as the Food Capital Of The World because agriculture is a major constituent of Iowa’s economy. Iowa produces and supplies dairy products, eggs, cattle, hogs, corn, soybeans, and oats among others.

To East, Iowa borders with Wisconsin and Illinois and these states are separated by the Mississippi River. To west, the Missouri River separates Iowa from the state of Nebraska. To North, Minnesota forms border with Iowa and to South, Iowa borders with Missouri. This state’s vegetation is composed of tallgrass and savannah but there are also lots of thick forests. A large amount of land in this state is used for agriculture and various crops cover more than half of Iowa’s territory.

Unfortunately, as most of the original tallgrass prairie once found in this state is now gone and the forests are almost entirely lost. This situation leads to a dramatic increase in the number of endangered plants and animals in this state. Some of the endangered plants in this state are: the Prairie Bush Clover, the Western Prairie Fringed Orchid, the Northern Wild Monkshood, the Mead's Milkweed, and the Eastern Prairie Fringed Orchid.

Among the animals threatened in Iowa, there are: the Iowa Pleistocene Land Snail, the Pallid Sturgeon, the Topeka Shiner, the Higgins' Eye Pearly Mussel, the Bald Eagle, the Interior Least Tern, the Piping Plover, the Indiana Bat, and others.
